Ford adds 1.5M vehicles to door latch recall
One month ago, Ford recalled nearly 830,000 vehicles to fix a problem with their door latches. Yesterday, the automaker added 1.5 million additional Ford and Lincoln cars, crossovers, and vans to that recall--most of them registered in the U.S.
The underlying issue in these new vehicles remains the same as in those previously recalled. It's rooted in the pawl spring tab found in the side door latches. If the tab breaks, it can prevent the doors from closing. It's also possible, though less likely, that a door can close with a broken tab, then open while a vehicle is in motion.

Initially, Ford knew of only one accident and one injury related to the problem. Over the past month, Ford has learned of two more injuries that might be linked to the faulty components.
In August, Ford said it was limiting the recall to vehicles manufactured on specific dates. Now, it appears that all of the following models are included, regardless of their build dates:
- 2013-2015 Ford C-MAX
- 2013-2015 Ford Escape
- 2012-15 Ford Focus
- 2015 Ford Mustang
- 2014-16 Ford Transit Connect
- 2015 Lincoln MKC
All told, the recall now affects 2,383,292 vehicles. Of that number, 2,046,297 are registered in the U.S., 233,034 are in Canada, and the remaining 61,363 are in Mexico.
As with the initial recall, Ford says that dealers will replace side door latches on those vehicles at no charge.
