Weekend Box Office - April 28-30, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - In its third weekend, “Fate of the Furious” easily topped the domestic box office with $19.3 million. It also crossed the $1 billion mark, thanks to an incredible international total that now sits at $867 million. Its $197 million domestic haul is nothing to scoff at, but it is the film’s performance overseas that is really remarkable.

Still, the story of the week might be the fact that “How to Be a Latin Lover” was able to double the experts’ estimates and finish in second with $12 million.

Or it could be how “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” opened to $10.1 million, the largest domestic opening for a Bollywood film.

Then again, it could be how “The Circle,” the latest from director James Ponsoldt (“(500) Days of Summer”) with big names Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega on the marquee underperformed and finished the weekend with $9.3 million. Poor reviews of the sci-fi thriller didn’t help.

In fifth place for the weekend was “The Boss Baby” with $9 million. The film has now earned $375 million worldwide.

Ahead of its domestic debut, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” opened in various international markets to the tune of $101.2 million. Look for the film to open to $150 million or so stateside next weekend.
