CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Hours after the death of Batman, billboards acknowledging the Caped Crusader were launched with the bat signal in the Charleston area.

It was a fitting tribute to Adam West, best known as Batman on the TV series that aired from 1966 to 1968 and has since been rerun on cable television channels year after year.

The special tribute from Adams Outdoor Advertising is one of several recently launched to recognize holidays, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, and those immortalized by the entertainment business.

In December 2016, the company released tributes to Carrie Fisher on its digital billboards after the actress' death. Representatives of Adams Outdoor said no one paid for the signs, they just wanted to honor the "Star Wars" icon.

West died Friday at age 88 after a battle with leukemia.
