Alec Baldwin hits back at President Trump over 'Saturday Night Live' criticism
(WENN) - Alec Baldwin has fired back at PresidentDonald Trump for criticising his "terrible" impression of the U.S. President on comedy show "Saturday Night Live."
The actor won an Emmy Award in 2017 for his impersonation of Trump, but in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alec admitted he finds the gig "agony," because although working on SNL is fun, it's a constant reminder that the controversial reality TV boss and property mogul-turned-politician is the Commander-in-Chief.
"Every time I do it now, it's like agony...," he said. "I could go out on the street, stand on any corner and tap 10 people on the shoulder. And all 10 of them, in all likelihood, would be more qualified - ethically, morally, intellectually and spiritually - than Trump."
Baldwin's comments clearly struck a nerve with Trump, who was quick to respond to the remarks on Twitter in the early hours of Friday.
However, the Republican leader's frantic missive was littered with spelling mistakes - even getting Alec's first name wrong.
"Alex Baldwin, whose dieing mediocre career was saved by his impersonation of me on SNL, now says playing DJT (Donald J. Trump) was agony for him," Trump wrote. "Alex, it was also agony for those who were forced to watch. You were terrible."
He then suggested SNL bosses "bring back Darrell Hammond", who previously portrayed Trump on the show, claiming the comedian was a "much funnier and a far greater talent".
Trump quickly deleted his tweet and reposted his message with the corrected spellings, and it didn't take long for Alec to hit back, insisting he has no plans to quit because he is looking forward to juicier White House headlines in the months to come.
"Agony though it may be, I'd like to hang in there for the impeachment hearings, the resignation speech, the farewell helicopter ride to Mara-A-Lago (Trump's golf resort in Florida)," Baldwin quipped. "You know. The Good Stuff. That we've all been waiting for."
The Departed star then took another swipe at Trump, urging the President to ask his wife to "stop calling me for SNL tickets".
Concluding his posts, 59-year-old Baldwin made it clear his career is anything but flailing as he revealed he was heading off to work on a new movie, called Motherless Brooklyn, alongside an all-star line up, including Bruce Willis, Willem Dafoe, and Edward Norton, who is also serving as director.
"If this is mediocrity, give me more," Alec stated.
Baldwin has also landed his own TV talk show - the first episode of Sundays with Alec Baldwin will air after the Oscars this weekend (04Mar18).
